Dr. Zier’s interest in nitrous oxide sedation
As a sedation provider with over 15 years experience, Dr. Zier was intrigued by the possibility of using nitrous oxide sedation for children undergoing painful or distressing medical procedurs. Faced with a lack of educational opportunities for non-anesthesiologist physicians, Dr. Zier enrolled in and completed a course designed to prepare dentists for nitrous oxide sedation licensure.
Dr. Zier took this “dental” knowledge back to her local children’s hospital where she was instrumental in designing and implementing a nitrous oxide program for medical procedural sedation. Nitrous oxide has provided relief of distress and pain for over 10,000 children since the program went live in 2004.
Dr. Zier has since published several articles about nitrous oxide sedation. She has also been invited to lecture at national meetings about the benefits of nitrous oxide procedural sedation in children. These meetings include the annual Pediatric Pain Master Class hosted by the Children’s Institute for Pain and Palliative Care at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatic Sedation.
Zier Group, LLC
Dr. Zier found that nitrous oxide is an excellent agent to decrease the anxiety and pain of many pediatric medical procedures. She recognized, however, the many barriers to widespread adoption of nitrous oxide sedation in medical facilities. These barriers include the difficulty for a physician or other non-dental health care provider to get training in nitrous oxide sedation.
In response, Zier Group, LLC, was created with the goal of overcoming many of the barriers to nitrous oxide medical procedural sedation. By providing a repository of information and an opportunity for online nitrous oxide education, Zier Group strives to increase children’s access to nitrous oxide for medical procedural sedation.
